Closing Years

JULY 16. Clara and Teresa (Italian maid) went to the
summer home, Lee, Mass., in the Berkshire Hills.

July 18. At 9:15 I and Ugo, butler (he arrived from
Italy with the horses on Friday) left for Lee and arrived
at 1:07. Jean and Katy left at 3:30 and arrived about 7.

July 22. Clara, sick, heart-broken, unrestful, returned
to N. Y. with Katy to rest awhile with Miss Dr. Parry.

Katy Leary was with Susy when she died in '96, and
with Livy when she died. She has been in our service 23
years.

July 24. Cold. We built a fire in my room. Then clawed
the logs out and threw water, remembering there is a
brood of swallows in the chimney. The tragedy was
averted.

Lee, Mass. Berkshire Hills, July 31, 1904.

Last night the young people out on a moonlight ride.
Trolley frightened Jean's horse. Collision. Horse killed.
Rodman Gilder picked Jean up—unconscious; she was
taken to the doctor per the car. Face, nose, side, back,
contused; tendon of left ankle broken.

August 10. New York. Clara here sick—never well since
June 5. Jean is at the summer home in Berkshire Hills,
crippled.
