CHAPTER XXXI In Vienna After two months in Weggis we find the Clemens family located at the Hotel Metropole, in Vienna. VIENNA, Tuesday, Sept. 28, '97. Left Salzburg noon yes- terday, arrived 7 PM. in Vienna. Visited seven hotels last night before we could get a suitable lodging. Stopped at the Hotel Miiller. Visited eight hotels today and then moved to the Metropole. We have never approached this record before. Hotel Metropole, Vienna, Oct. 3, '97, At the next round table to ours sits a princess (daughter of the Dowager Empress Frederick, and granddaughter of Victoria); also the young daughter of the above and her intended, the young Prince Henry Reuss, called Henry III, whose mother and sister and uncle, the Prince von Wernigerode, in Ilsenburg, were in the Hartz Mountains six years ago. With them, a maid of honor, and a couple of Equerries. Good-looking people. They all smoke. A man has sent me a Bible 250 years old (formerly the property of Queen Christina, of Sweden) to look at. It is as big as a trunk—and as uninteresting as an empty one. It has been in the room three days and we are get- ting tired of the responsibility. To people who value such antiquities it must be worth much money. 339
