admitting a murder which he hadn't committed—then
executed.

Victoria. Last week Lord Crowley (to try to save the
name of Mrs. Charrington) confessed under oath on the
witness stand (after kissing the Bible, no doubt) adulterv
with a prostitute in Brighton. The Judge said it must be
corroborated by independent testimony or he could not
accept the thing as being proved.

Also, the Scull girl voluntarily, without suggestion or
invitation of any kind, confessed that she killed the child-
the judge refused to hold her for trial because there wasn't
sufficient independent testimony to make her confession
good.

A foreigner in England wished to hire a maid, and
knew that a maid and virgin are the same thing. The
first applicant had merely heard that he wanted a house-
servant but did not know in what capacity. She said she
was a cook and asked what he wanted. He said—"I want
a virgin. If you are not a virgin I do not want you. You
do not look like a virgin." At this point the neighbors
flocked to his rescue and he was removed to the hospital.
